My Daily Warming Hot Cacao Recipe
Chocolate, or raw cacao, as it’s known in its minimally processed state, is loaded with nutritional oomph.
A potent source of magnesium, iron, and a host of other minerals and antioxidants, it stimulates cognitive function, benefits the heart and cardiovascular system, acts a prebiotic for your gut microbes, and stimulates the release of mood-boosting neurotransmitters.
It’s also a great vehicle for warming spices like cinnamon and cardamom that kindle digestion and help to balance the cold of the season.
Here’s what I combine in a mug literally every day:
- 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
- 12-16 oz. hot water (or substitute some sort of milk for half the water if you like milkier chocolate)
- ¼easpoon cardamom powder
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
- Optional: ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, pinch of sea salt, ginger, dash of clove or cayenne if you’re prone to feeling cold, mesquite powder)
- Natural sweetener to taste (stevia, maple syrup, and honey all work well)
Enjoy!
