“I must be getting old.”  It’s an easy conclusion to jump to.

Maybe you don’t have the energy you’d like. You feel stiff. Maybe your back hurts (or your hips, or knees, neck, or shoulders). The world feels like it’s moving too fast.  But it’s not true that you have to fall apart before you die.

You also don’t have to live on ibuprofen and caffeine, or outsource your wellness to your doctor, acupuncturist, massage therapist, or chiropractor.

In 20 minutes a day, you can increase your energy and mobility while calming your nervous system and your mind.

You can do this anywhere, anytime, with no special equipment, and without getting sweaty. When you change how you breathe and how you move, you dramatically change how you feel.

One of the oldest systems of breathing and moving that dates back millennia in China is qi gong – think Daoist yoga, but more flowy. Qi gong (pronounced “chee-gong”) is one of the simplest, gentlest, most profound self-care tools out there. Here’s why:

It’s stress relief: You probably know that stress contributes to the vast majority of conditions for which people see a doctor. Qi gong provides you with you a specific way to relax, get out of your head and into your body, to ground and center yourself, whenever or wherever you need it.

It’s a way of meditating without having to sit still. You’ve heard sitting is the new smoking, right? Maybe you’ve tried to quiet your mind and increase your emotional balance with meditation, but struggled with getting your mind to settle down. In qi gong, you connect your body, mind, and breath into a moving meditation.

It’s gentle pain-relieving exercise: gently lengthening your muscles and tendons, opening the joints as well as the channel systems of acupuncture, while building your sense of energy. Each movement brings energy to a particular system of the body: the lungs, liver, heart, spleen, kidney, the seven emotions, and overall energy flow. It’s like a movement-based daily vitamin for your body and mind.

It’s self-healing: Just as an acupuncturist uses needles to balance the qi of the different organ systems in the body, you can help keep your own qi flowing well, open up areas of stagnation, and recharge your own energy by practicing qi gong regularly.

Starting your day with qi gong helps you:

  • Move with more ease and less pain
  • Feel energized
  • Feel more grounded and less anxious
  • Improve your balance (physical and emotional, and hormonal!)
  • Reduce arthritis, anxiety, heart disease, high blood pressure, risk of stroke, diabetes, asthma, and a whole host of other conditions
  • Experience relief from a stressful, noisy world
  • Increase your energy and balance

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: When does the next class start?

A: Anytime you want!

Q: Do I have to sit in front of a computer?

A: Nope. You can download your videos and audio onto your phone or tablet, print out your written guides and take them with you anywhere.

Q: I have trouble exercising because of pain. Will I be able to do qi gong?

A: Qi gong should feel good. The movements are slow, mindful, and gentle. If something hurts, simply back off the physical expression of the form and practice it in your mind — you’ll be activating the same neuropathways and training your inner vision. This is one of qi gong’s strengths. Of course, you should consult your health care provider if you have any concerns.

Q: I have the memory of a goldfish. Will I really be able to learn this?

A: Very likely! 12 Treasures qi gong is among the easiest forms to learn and remember because all the movements start and end the same way. Also, each movement is repeated several times, etching it into your muscle memory.

In addition to the practice video, where I talk you through the whole thing, you’ll get a written practice guide and cheat sheets to help jog your memory until your body knows the form by heart. Plus, the class is delivered in three bite-sized chunks so you can get familiar with the movements a few at a time.

Q: Is qi gong like tai chi?

A: Yes – a lot like tai chi in that the movements are flowing and grounded. Tai chi is the martial arts branch of qi gong, where you’re harnessing qi for the purposes of self-defense. In 12 Treasures Qi Gong, you’re cultivating qi for self-healing.

Q: Are you qualified to teach me?

A: Heck yeah. I’ve been cultivating energy in my personal practices of meditation, qi gong, Reiki, and yoga for nearly 20 years and have had the privilege of studying with many Masters. I have also spent thousands of hours studying qi, and have the Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine, am certified as a Senior Healing Qi Gong teacher, with other teaching certifications in meditation and yoga. Plus, I put this knowledge to use every day in my Chinese Medical clinic.

Q: Do I have to believe in anything?

A: Nope. You don’t have to buy into any particular philosophy in order for qi gong to benefit you. But if you’re interested in the concepts of yin, yang, qi, and the holism of Chinese Medicine I introduce you to them.

Q: A life-changing practice sounds expensive. How much is it?

A: Roughly the cost of 1-2 months of a gym membership, and less than a typical weekend workshop or an 8-week learn-in-person class.

“Thank you so much for offering the 12 treasures practice! I am really enjoying it. I actually WANT to do it every day. When I don’t I get a feeling similar to when you haven’t brushed your teeth in a while – it just needs doing!” – Cassidy Brown

“Brodie’s qi gong classes have been a gateway to my discovering health and ease of being. Her depth of knowledge, engaging teaching style, and experienced practice offers a profoundly transformative experience that has helped me feel enlivened on a cellular level.

Qi gong has helped me overcome many negative emotions in my life, including anxiety, fear, sadness and overwhelm — which depleted my ability to step into the life that I was wanting but wasn’t experiencing. Qi gong has helped me get out of this dissociated rut. It has also helped me restore my natural wake-sleep rhythm.– Rachael Mueller, PhD

Five of the 12 treasures have become the way I start my day—it’s as if my body is hungry for it. My back in particular is a big fan and I will return to my favorite movement later in the day to relieve the tightness and aches after a demanding day in the shop, or at night to help with sleep. And I’ve had these experiences in spite of a fair degree of skepticism.” – Pat Megowan
